To get the right settings for light painting, the camera will have to be able take a picture for long enough so you can draw your light drawing; to do this you put the Shutter speed in the range of 5 seconds to about 30 seconds, to do this you move the dial on top of the camera, in front of the trigger. As the Shutter speed is on a low number, much more light will be caught around the image, this will blur the image, to make the lighting clear you can change the aperture to a higher number, probably around F16 to F22. to do this, you press the button that has a Q on it next to the screen, this will let you change all the settings of your Camera.

In doing my class work, I started to learn how to draw with light, it was a frustrating process as it was- at first- quite confusing to draw something accurately. The camera settings was not the issue; the actual light painting was. As I didn’t have a Maglite I had to use my iPhone torch, this made my drawings less accurate as I could not look at what I was drawing from the camera screen. As well as this, we did not have a great amount of time, so we had to find ideas quite quickly, so a lot of my school ideas are not original or extremely creative. However, for the amount of time we had, I believe that this shoot was a great starting point for my light painting work

In this photograph, I tried to outline a high stool with a phone torch. It did not go as well as I planned as the outline is out of place and the actual stool is less visible, so overall it is not the best image that I have taken. However for a first try in light painting, there is a shape that represents a stool, so in that respect you could argue that the photograph was a success.
I put the shutter speed to 20 seconds and put the aperture to F22 and put the ISO to 100. I did this so that the light would be allowed to travel around the object and then be captured by the camera, and because I used these settings the environment that the image captured was extremely dark, I did this so that the light could be seen more clearly as it would be contrasting the darkness. If I were to redo this image I would take more time in choosing my settings so that the chair could be more visible. I would also take more care in outlining the chair so the shape would seem more reminiscent to a stool. |
¡In capturing my images, I came up with the idea that I wanted to capture two parts of the light painting project: using moving light (in this case, the movement of cars), and the drawing of light to create or imitate objects or people. To get the right lighting for my images, I again ranged my shutter speed form 2 seconds, to 30 seconds; I put my aperture on F22 and sometimes changed it to F20 or F16 and I fixed my ISO to 100. to capture the moving cars I mounted my camera on a tripod and used 2 seconds to capture more direct light in a shorter amount of times, I used cars for my main subject in the moving light work, however for the actual light painting I used playground objects such as swings and roundabouts. Putting my shutter speed on a much longer period of time, I drew round these images- with as much detail as I could- and using a very powerful Maglite torch, it worked with good success. What worked well with my images where that they were well detailed and clear, however they weren’t as creative as some other ideas that I could have used to make my photography project more exciting.

Image 1
This image is part of my movement light painting photo shoot, this is interesting, as the light of the car at the start of the image is all over the place in flare of sparks, and it gradually morphs into a straight line of blaring light. The colours of red and yellow go against each other well. As well as this the environment around the car is strangely saturated, probably due to the amount of light the F-number is letting in to the camera. For this image the shutter speed is at two seconds, so the clarity of the light is increased, and the ISO and the aperture are at low numbers to let more light into the camera |
Image 2
Like the first image, this is part of the movement shoot, the shutter speed is an one second and the aperture and ISO are at the same settings, as the shutter speed is on a lower number there is a clearer image of the actual car, mixed with the light movement. This image is not as good as expected, as the exposure of light is not right. The image is too bright, as I wanted my images to incorporate a dark horror-like image, this image didn’t capture that idea. To improve the image I should of lowered the aperture to allow less light to get in, this would keep the light of the car, but the environment will be darker. Image 3
This is the third image of my movement light shoot. I like this image as it makes me think of a lightning bolt shooting through the sky, destroying everything in its path. The blaring light definitely captures the contrast in the bright lighting and the dark malevolent environment, the idea that I wanted to capture in my photo shoot. However, you can not see anything of the car, so to improve the image, I would of put my shutter speed to a smaller time period so that you could start to see a moving object that is the car, but overall this image comes up great as it can starts to create alternate images in my head. |
